India

Tapping on the significant economic growth of the Indian Sub-continent, WongPartnership LLP’s India Practice actively advises a wide spectrum of clients both within Singapore and in the region who are looking towards India to further their business interests and from India who are looking into doing business in Singapore and the region. Our considerable experience in cross-jurisdictional matters, ensures that the Firm is able to service the legal needs of our clients who are interested in expanding their business interests in Asia and beyond.

The India Practice has considerable experience in advising on both transactional and dispute resolution matters.

On transactional experience, we advise financial institutions, securities houses, multi-national companies, developers and contractors on a wide variety of issues relating to India. These clients range from those who are entering India for the first time and who would like guidance on the legal landscape there to those who have established businesses but who want the same quality of legal service that they are accustomed to from us in Singapore. The Practice has been involved in and is capable of advising in areas such as Mergers & Acquisitions, Township developments, Construction and Infrastructure Projects, and Private Equity Investments and Joint Ventures.

On dispute resolution experience, we have been at the forefront of bilateral developments. The Practice was actively involved in the collaboration between the Construction Industry Development Council of India and the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (“SIAC”) to set up a Dispute Resolution Centre in New Delhi. The Practice was retained to advise SIAC on this venture, which represents SIAC's first regional effort. We have also served as legal adviser to the STA Consortium Pte Ltd (a group of 14 Singapore contractors and consultants venturing into India).

The Practice offers seamless service to clients through its relationships with Indian law firms in major Indian cities. We are in a position to marshal the considerable experience that WongPartnership LLP has in the area of international arbitrations, enabling us to advise on international arbitrations involving diverse areas; from construction related disputes to corporate and other commercial disputes under the SIAC, LCIA, ICC, or UNCITRAL Rules, UNCITRAL Model Law or other institutional arbitral procedure.

The Firm has released two India-related books; Doing Business in India published by Sweet & Maxwell in 2004 which serves as a useful guide to Singapore companies that wish to find out more about India's legal and business systems, and India-Singapore CECA (Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement) - The Investor's Guide published by Lexis Nexis in 2005. The latter is an essential reference for investors who are keen to leverage off the CECA in venturing into India and Singapore.
