Susan WONG co-heads the Banking & Finance Practice.
Her main practice areas are banking, financial law and regulations, loan and debt-related transactions (local and international), electronic banking, derivatives transactions, bankruptcy laws and debt restructuring.
She has over 20 years of experience in banking and financial work and is involved in a wide range of loan and other debt-related transactions - both locally and internationally - including project, asset and asset-backed financing, financing relating to takeover offers, syndicated and club loans, cross border financing, risk and funded sub-participations, securitisations, sale of loans and receivables, and security arrangements and documentation. Susan also advises on other aspects of financial laws and regulations, electronic banking and derivatives transactions as well as on bankruptcy laws and debt restructuring. Her clients include domestic and foreign banks, financial institutions and major corporates.
Matters of significance which Susan has been involved in include acting for the syndicate of Lenders in the S$1.939 billion financing to MGP Berth Pte Limited for the purchase and development of the One Marina View land site; and acting for the syndicate of banks in the financing of up to S$1.25 billion to South Beach Consortium Pte. Ltd. to part-finance the purchase of the site at Beach Road, on which the South Beach Project will be developed. She also acted for Citibank N.A., Singapore Branch and DBS Bank Ltd. in the financing of up to S$140 million to Ascendas Property Fund Trustee Pte. Ltd. (in its capacity as Trustee-Manager for Ascendas India Trust) ("a-iTrust") for the financing of certain construction projects (including a "built-to-suit" project and a construction of a retail mall) and acquisitions in India and working capital requirements of a-iTrust, Singapore’s first listed Indian property business trust.
Susan's project financing experience includes acting for the syndicate of banks, as Singapore counsel, in the senior financing of more than S$300 million to Gammon Capital (West) Pte Ltd for purposes of this PPP Project which will see the construction of a new 10-ha campus for ITE West College, a Singapore educational institute; acting for the financiers in the US$1 billion Siltronic/Samsung wafer fabrication plant project - a joint venture between a wholly owned subsidiary of Siltronic AG and a wholly owned subsidiary of Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd, for the development, construction, ownership and operation of a 300mm silicon wafer production facility located in Singapore; and acting for the financiers in the "Island Power" Project involving a gas turbine power plant and associated infrastructure to be located on Jurong Island, Singapore, and Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. L.P. (KKR) and Precision Capital Pte Ltd in its US$600 million financing for the acquisition of the Singapore mainboard-listed precision engineering group, MMI Holdings Limited, through a scheme of arrangement.The deal was one of the largest technology buyouts in Singapore by a private equity fund and is KKR's first public deal in Singapore. It was awarded "Best Leveraged Financing" by FinanceAsia 2007.
Susan graduated from the National University of Singapore and was admitted to the Singapore Bar. She is a member of the Singapore documentation committee of the Asia Pacific Loan Market Association.
She has been recommended as a "leading individual" for Banking and Finance work by Asia Pacific Legal 500 and is ranked in the Guide to the World's Leading Banking Lawyers. Susan is also recognised in Who's Who Legal - Singapore 2008, as a "financing authority" and is praised for her "comprehensive approach".
Susan has also been recognised as a "leading lawyer" for Banking & Finance work by Chambers Global - The World's Leading Lawyers for Business since 2002. She has been described by the publication as being "particularly outstanding in financing" and "valued by clients for her appreciation of the different dynamics in the various jurisdictions we work in", a “canny capital markets operator”, “an expert on regulatory matters amongst other things”, “a performer who always keeps a cool head as deals near fruition” and “an old hand who has seen it all” who “keeps abreast of all the recent legal developments.” Clients were quoted as affirming Susan as "technically sound", and "up to speed on all our legal requirements". She is also valued by clients for the fact that "she advises in a very commercial way, and balances all parties’ interests well.” In the 2008 edition of Chambers Global, Susan is ranked as a leading Projects & Energy lawyer.
