Joy TAN, Partner

Joy TAN co-heads the Corporate Governance & Compliance Practice and is a Partner in the Commercial & Corporate Litigation Practice.

Her main practice areas are banking, corporate and commercial litigation, dispute resolution, particularly in shareholder disputes and energy-related disputes.

Joy has represented corporations and minority as well as majority shareholders in disputes relating to minority oppression, corporate transactions and share valuations. She also regularly advises companies and their officers on compliance and regulatory matters under the Companies Act, Securities and Futures Act and other regulating statutes, including in relation to corporate fraud, anti-money laundering issues and insider trading. She has also advised international conglomerates in the oil and gas industry in relation to domestic and international arbitrations concerning complex issues of fuel and product pricing, joint ventures and take or pay claims, including represented an international MNC in arbitration proceedings under the UNCITRAL Rules against Developer and Contractor in relation to damage caused by development works.

Joy graduated with First Class Honours from Cambridge University. In 1992, she was awarded the UK Council of Legal Education Prize at the Non-Vocational Bar Exam. Joy was admitted to the English Bar and to the Singapore Bar. She joined the Singapore Legal Service as a Justices' Law Clerk with the Singapore Supreme Court before entering private practice.

Joy is a Panel Member of The Law Society Disciplinary Committee appointed by The Honourable Chief Justice under the Legal Profession Act.

Joy is an executive committee member of the Singapore Association of Women Lawyers, a member of the Law Society of Singapore, and was a Member of the 1999 Rules of Court Working Party (sub-committee of the Law Reform Committee).

Joy speaks and writes on corporate fraud and anti-money laundering topics, including at the International Bar Association 2007 conference in Singapore and the upcoming Global Fraud Summit in October 2008. She served as Assistant Editor with Professor Walter Woon for the Review of Judicial and Legal Reforms in Singapore Between 1990 and 1995, published by Butterworths Asia (1996), and is a contributor to Singapore Civil Procedure, published by Sweet & Maxwell Asia (2007).

Joy is also recognised for Corporate Governance work in Singapore by PLC Global Counsel Handbooks - Corporate Governance since 2006.
