Colin ONG - Partner

Colin ONG is a Partner in both the Corporate/Mergers & Acquisitions and the Debt Capital Markets & Structured Finance Practice.

His main practice areas are debt capital markets, securitisations, mergers & acquisitions and venture capital.

Colin has been in legal practice since his admission to the Singapore Bar in 1999, and has been with WongPartnership LLP since May 2001 (save for his stint in a leading international law firm from July 2005 to October 2007).

During Colin’s stint as a U.S. securities lawyer, he was involved in a number of significant international equity offerings, including as international counsel for the underwriters in the US$1.6 billion American depositary shares offering by Infosys Technologies Limited - the largest equity offering by an Indian issuer in 2006 and the largest ever secondary ADS offering from India. He also acted as transaction counsel in the US$222 million initial public offering of stapled securities in CDL Hospitality Trusts, a stapled group comprising CDL Hospitality Real Estate Investment Trust and CDL Hospitality Business Trust - Asia’s first hotel Real Estate Investment Trust offering, and the underwriters in the US$300 million offering of shares (directly and indirectly in the form of global depositary shares) of P.T. Medco Energi Internasional Tbk.

In the area of international debt offerings, Colin acted for the underwriters in connection with the US$175 million zero coupon convertible bonds offering by Orchid Chemicals & Pharmaceuticals Limited. He also acted for the lead managers in connection with the US$176.9 million offering of convertible bonds by P.T. Medco Energi Internasional Tbk., the largest independent oil and gas company in Indonesia, and international counsel in the US$65 million zero coupon convertible bonds offering by IVRCL Infrastructures & Projects Limited.

Colin’s public M&A experience in Singapore include acting for Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance, Co., Ltd as Singapore legal counsel in its acquisition of the general insurance business of the Aviva plc group of companies in Asia for about US$450 million, 98 Holdings Pte Ltd in its successful mandatory conditional cash offer for NatSteel Ltd, Deutsche Bank AG as Singapore counsel in the sale of its global securities operation to State Street Corporation for about US$1.5 billion, and United Overseas Bank Limited in its successful take-over of Overseas Union Bank for about US$10.0 billion - this was a transaction involving a competitive bid between two Singapore banks, and which was until recently the largest take-over transaction in Singapore in terms of deal value.

Colin has also advised leading venture capital funds, government statutory boards, business angels as well as investee companies in relation to direct investment transactions. Institutional clients have included Temasek Capital, Russell AIF Funds, UOB Venture Management, Vertex Management as well as various companies listed on the Singapore Exchange.  He has been involved in a wide range of transactions including seed rounds and mezzanine investments.

Colin graduated from the National University of Singapore, and attended the Graduate Program in Law and Business jointly administered by the Northwestern University School of Law and the Kellogg School of Management, where he obtained a Master of Laws and a Certificate in Business Administration.  In addition to his Singapore and New York law qualifications, Colin also gained admission to the Rolls of Solicitors of England and Wales.
