Alvin YEO, Senior Counsel, is the Senior Partner of WongPartnership LLP. His main areas of practice are banking and corporate disputes, insolvency and restructuring, and construction and civil engineering matters. Alvin has extensive experience in arbitration proceedings both in Singapore and in the region including Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and Brunei.
Some notable matters he has been involved in include acting for the Land Transport Authority of Singapore on a dispute with NCC International AB relating to the Singapore Circle Line Project, in respect of claims for variations, delay and additional expense; acting for a global energy conglomerate in an international arbitration with a statutory board under the UNCITRAL Rules; and acting for Bayerische Hypo- und Vereinsbank AG in court proceedings against Asia Pacific Breweries (Singapore) Pte Ltd in relation to the largest fraud in Singapore's corporate history, which was committed by an employee of Asia Pacific Breweries (Singapore) Pte Ltd. Alvin has also acted for a large French multi-national conglomerate with interests in power generation and transport markets, in its landmark jurisdictional challenge of an award arising out of a clause requiring the SIAC to administer an arbitration under the ICC Rules, which ruling has set the precedent in respect of similar clauses; a global energy conglomerate in an international arbitration with a statutory board under the UNCITRAL Rules, for a private equity fund in a shareholder dispute arising out of a US$170 million leveraged buy-out of an electronics manufacturer and has also acted as counsel in the Singapore aspect of a series of multi-jurisdictional enforcement proceedings (spanning the United States, Singapore, Canada and Hong Kong) on a Swiss arbitral award for US$261 million against Pertamina, Indonesia's state-owned oil and gas corporation.
Alvin graduated from King’s College London, University of London, and was admitted to the English Bar (Gray’s Inn) in 1987 and the Singapore Bar in 1988. In January 2000, Alvin became the youngest lawyer to be appointed Senior Counsel.
He is a member of the ICC Commission of Arbitration, the Singapore International Arbitration Centre's Main Panel of Arbitrators and a Fellow of the Singapore Institute of Arbitrators. Alvin has served on various committees which undertook a comprehensive review of the legal services sector. He is a Member of Parliament, and Chairman of the Government Parliamentary Committee for Home Affairs and Law.
Alvin has several publications related to his main areas of practice, including co-authoring the Singapore chapter in PLC Cross-Border Dispute Resolution Handbook 2008/09: Arbitration and co-authoring an article on insolvency restructuring in Singapore in the Global Insolvency & Restructuring Yearbook 2004/05 published by Euromoney. Alvin also authored the chapter on Singapore in Bank Confidentiality published by Butterworths (2003 and 2006), and an article in the International Arbitration Law Review (2002) on the changes to Singapore's arbitration regime.
