His main practice areas are syndicated loans, project finance, property development loans, trade financing, debt restructuring, private banking transactions, standard forms for consumer credit transactions and sales and participations of credit receivables.
Transactions of significance which Alvin has been involved in include acting for Asia Mobile Holdings in relation to the US$960 million bridge loan financing; Asia Mobile Holdings is an indirect subsidiary of ST Telemedia and is a joint venture between ST Telemedia and a Qtel, the Qatar state-owned telco; WestLB AG, Singapore Branch, as arranger, in a US$300 million loan to a wholly-owned subsidiary and the marketing arm of April Pacific Resources International Holdings, the second largest hardwood market pulp producer in the world. This facility is the largest structured commodity financing and the first international syndicate lending since the Asian financial crisis of 1998. It is also one of the largest deals arranged for a soft commodity producer out of Indonesia and was awarded "Deal of the Year 2006" in Euromoney's Trade Finance Magazine; United Overseas Bank Limited, as arranger, in the S$429 million credit facilities granted to a developer for financing the en bloc purchase of Nassim Park, a major condominium development; joint venture companies owned by Lehman Brothers and Chip Eng Seng group in credit facilities of S$500 million for property redevelopments; and Lend Lease Retail Investments 1 Pte. Ltd. ("LLRI") as borrower in their financing for the purchase and construction of a retail development site (known as "Somerset Central") from the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Singapore, the financing amounting to S$660 million. This is a landmark transaction as Somerset Central is seen as the last remaining prime site along Orchard Road, the main shopping belt of Singapore. LLRI's winning bid set a record unit land price for a Government Land Sale site.
In addition, he has been involved in non-transactional work for banks and financial institutions and other non-direct lending transactional work such as advising banks on their standard documentation and regulatory matters and advising private banks on matters relevant to lending particular to private banking practices and clientele, including Credit Suisse, Citibank and DBS Bank.
